What is a .ECO domain?
.ECO is a type of generic top-level domain (gTLD), with a unique registration process. .ECO domains require completing a two-stage activation process. First, the domain is registered, and placed on a hold status. Second, an activation email is sent to the registrant, where they are asked to make a public pledge to sustainable development goals of their choice.
These pledges are amalgamated at https://www.profiles.eco, which allows members of the public to identify who is behind a particular .ECO domain. This approach was designed in consultation with environmental organizations, to minimize disinformation and other forms abuse arising from the use of .ECO domains. It is also intended to create a sense of community between .ECO owners, who all share a common interest in helping to protect and preserve our planet.
Who can register a .ECO?
You can! As a generic domain, a .ECO is able to be registered by anyone, anywhere. You can get them for your business, sustainable products, non-profit organizations, or even for yourself. The only requirement is completing the activation process.
How do I activate my new .ECO domain?
Look for an activation email from the .ECO registry, prompting you to create a .ECO profile. The .ECO profile makes your commitment to protecting the planet public, and allows .ECO owners to connect with one another. You don't need to have an action plan for the domain, but the profile needs to be filled out before the domain becomes active.
When can I expect my activation email?
You should receive the activation email immediately after buying your .eco domain. However, in certain circumstances, it could take up to 2 hours for the email to arrive.
I still have not received my email. What do I do?
You can use the "Lost activation email" feature on the .ECO profiles site.
Why am I not receiving my activation email?
If you've tried resending the activation email for your .eco domain and still haven't received it, here are a few tips:
- Check you spam folder.
- Confirm that you have access to the email address associated with your registration. Domain privacy services are offered as an option with Rebel, and these services anonymize the contact details you provided when you registered the domain name. When the .ECO registry resends the activation email, they use this anonymized privacy address. Please check with us to make sure we have not received it instead.
