What is a .IN domain?
.IN is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for India, managed by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).
It is widely used by businesses, organizations, and individuals targeting the Indian market, and is also popular for global use due to its short and versatile format.
Who can register a .IN domain?
Anyone can register a .IN domain on a first-come, first-served basis. Physical local presence in India is not required.
However, all registrants must satisfy NIXI’s compliance and contact verification rules:
- International / Non-Resident Registrants: Entities outside of India must submit a Nexus Declaration selecting their business, commercial, or digital connection/purpose related to India during registration.
- Email Restrictions: NIXI strictly prohibits the use of temporary, disposable, or privacy/encrypted email providers (e.g., ProtonMail, Tutanota, Mailinator, Temp Mail, etc.) for registrant contacts. Standard domain or recognized email addresses must be used.
Registration restrictions
- Domain names must not violate applicable laws or third-party rights (e.g., trademarks).
- Non-resident registrants must agree to the official NIXI registry attestation terms upon registration.
- Certain restricted second-level domains (like
.gov.inor.edu.in) have strict institutional eligibility requirements.
Standard domain rules apply:
- Domain length must be between 3–63 characters
- Allowed characters: letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), and hyphens
- Hyphens cannot be used at the beginning or end of the domain name
- Special characters (e.g., &, #) are not allowed
- IDNs (internationalized domain names) are supported
Domain requirements
.IN domains must comply with standard DNS and naming conventions. A minimum of two nameservers (or a nameserver group) is required for successful registration and functional DNS routing.
Additional details
- Registration term: 1–10 years
- WHOIS privacy: Available
