Overview

.RU is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Russia, operated by the Coordination Center for TLD RU. It is a popular extension for businesses, organizations, and individuals targeting audiences in Eastern Europe.
 
Because the .RU registry enforces strict identity regulations, standard online checkout forms cannot automatically capture all required registry fields. As a result, .RU domain registrations require a manual support fulfillment step by the Rebel team after purchase.

Who Can Register a .RU Domain?

Anyone worldwide (individuals or entities) can register a .RU domain, provided they supply the mandatory identity parameters required by registry policies and Russian regulations. Local presence or local business activity is not required.
 

Mandatory Registrant Information Required

When contacted by Rebel Support, the customer must provide the following details so we can finalize registration via our system APIs:
 

1. For Individual Registrants

  • Full Legal Name: First name, last name, and optional middle name.
     
  • Cyrillic Name Fields: Non-Russia-based registrants may provide their legal name in Latin characters, which support staff will mirror to Cyrillic fields.
     
  • Date of Birth: YYYY-MM-DD format (e.g., 1980-01-01).
     
  • Mobile Phone Number: Must include country code (e.g., +1 5550192834). Phone verification may be required.
     
  • Identity Document Details (Driver's License, Passport, or National ID):
    • Document Type (e.g., Driver's License)
    • Document Number (e.g., DL-000000-000)
    • Document Series (If unavailable, a default placeholder is used)
    • Issue Date (YYYY-MM-DD)
    • Expiry Date (YYYY-MM-DD)
    • Issuing Authority/Organization (e.g., State/Province/Government Authority)
  • Full Postal Address: Physical address including street, house number, city, region, postal code, and country.
     
  • VAT Number: Optional.
Rebel Privacy & Data Security Policy: Any sensitive identity details provided to our team are transmitted securely to the registry solely to complete domain activation and are permanently purged from Rebel support logs immediately after processing.
 

2. For Companies / Legal Entities

  • Company Name: Must clearly state the legal entity type (e.g., Ltd., LLC, Inc., B.V., GmbH).
  • Company Registration / Tax / VAT Number: Mandatory ID number for business entities.
  • Legal & Postal Address: Full official corporate address.
  • Mobile Phone & Email: Valid contact information for the administrative point of contact.

Registry WHOIS Statuses & Verification

.RU domains utilize specific registry WHOIS statuses to indicate domain health:
  • REGISTERED: Domain registration is active.
     
  • DELEGATED / NOT DELEGATED: Indicates whether authoritative nameservers are successfully assigned and active.
     
  • VERIFIED / UNVERIFIED: Indicates whether registrant identity verification has been confirmed by the registry.
7-Day Identity Audit Notice: Per clauses 9.3.7–9.3.8 of registry policy, the registry may audit domain owner details at any time. If requested, valid ID/passport or business registration documents must be supplied within 7 calendar days, or domain delegation will be temporarily suspended (clause 5.6) until verified.

 

Technical Specifications & Registry Maintenance

  • Registry Operator: Coordination Center for TLD RU (whois.tcinet.ru)
     
  • Daily Maintenance Window: The registry is unreachable for standard operations (registrations, updates, transfers) Monday through Friday from 14:00 to 15:00 UTC due to expired domain deletion processing.
     
  • Allowed Characters: a-z, 0-9, and hyphens -. Cannot begin or end with a hyphen, nor contain hyphens in both the 3rd and 4th positions simultaneously.
     
  • IDN Support: No IDN characters allowed in .ru. Native Cyrillic domain names must be registered under the .рф TLD (.xn--p1ai).
     
  • Domain Length: Minimum 2 characters, maximum 63 characters.
     
  • Nameserver Requirements: At least two (2) authoritative nameservers located on separate Class C IP subnets are required for domain delegation.
     
  • Registration & Renewal Period: 1-year registration term.
     
  • Quarantine / Restoral Period: Includes a 30-day soft quarantine (grace) period after expiration where the domain can be restored without extra penalty fees before public release.
     
  • WHOIS Privacy: Not Available (Registry policy prohibits proxy/privacy services for .RU domains).
     
  • Legacy Subdomains Note: New registrations and incoming transfers for .com.ru, .net.ru, and .org.ru are no longer supported.
