It depends! All domains are set to auto-renew by default to help prevent accidental loss of ownership. When auto-renew is on, your domain is billed 45 days in advance of its expiration date. This early billing ensures there’s enough time to resolve any payment issues and keep your domain active without interruption.
If your domain has already been billed and you no longer wish to keep it, the options available to you will depend on when the billing took place in relation to the expiration date.
1. Within the 45-day pre-renewal period
If you contact our customer service team during the 45 days leading up to the domain’s renewal date, we will be able to reverse the renewal and offer more flexibility. Once we reverse it, you can either:
Cancel the domain immediately: You’ll no longer own it, and it will eventually become available for others to register after the deletion period.
Keep the domain until it expires: We will reverse the payment, and the domain will remain active until the original expiry date.
If this is something you would like, please contact our customer service team.
2. After the renewal/expiration date
If you contact us about the renewal payment on or after the renewal/expiration date, your options may be more limited. At this stage, the domain has already been renewed with the registry, which will affect eligibility for refunds or reversals. If this is the case, there are two options you can follow through with:
Cancel the domain immediately: You’ll no longer own it, and it will eventually become available for others to register after the deletion period. No refund will be possible.
Keep the domain until it expires: The domain will remain active until the new expiry date, and thereafter go through the deletion period and become available to the public.
3. Manually renewed
If the domain was manually renewed, we unfortunately cannot reverse or refund the payment. This is because once a manual renewal is processed, the payment is immediately sent to the domain’s registry, and the renewal is finalized. This applies whether the renewal was for one year or multiple years. In these cases, the domain will remain active for the full renewal term, and no credit or refund can be issued.
