Under CIRA (Canadian Internet Registration Authority) policies, registering a domain name that represents a Canadian municipality (such as a town, city, or local government entity) requires special authorization. This policy ensures that municipal domain names are reserved exclusively for or held on behalf of the legitimate local government.
To register a municipal .CA domain, CIRA requires a completed Certificate of Authorization for a Municipal Domain Name, which must be signed by an authorized municipal official (such as a Mayor, City Clerk, or department head). Submitting Your Documents & Security Verification
For security and verification purposes, phone requests and live chats cannot be used to process municipal domain authorizations. Your completed form and supporting documentation must be submitted by opening an email ticket directly from either the primary or alternate email address associated with your account on file.
Once received via verified email, our operations team will review your documentation, submit it directly to CIRA for verification, and finalize your domain registration right away.
