If you are suddenly locked out of your Plesk control panel (whether clicking through your Rebel dashboard or visiting
[https://canadaXX.rebel.com:8443] directly) and your websites hosted on that server refuse to load, you are likely encountering browser errors such as:ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUTThis site can’t be reached – took too long to respond- Constant loading or spinning wheels across Chrome, Edge, Safari, and incognito windows
Why Does This Happen?
If this is happening to you, you are not losing your mind:
- It fails on all your devices: Testing on your phone, laptop, or desktop on the same Wi-Fi produces the exact same timeout error.
- Other websites work normally: You can browse the rest of the web without issue.
- Our Support team can see your site fine: Outside visitors and our support agents report that your website and hosting server are fully online.
The Cause: Automated Firewall Protection (Imunify360 & OSSEC)
Rebel’s hosting servers are protected by enterprise security defenses designed to block malicious attacks, vulnerability scans, and brute-force break-in attempts.
If multiple failed actions occur from your network within a short window, the firewall flags the connection as a potential intrusion (e.g., “Possible breaking attempt to Plesk”) and temporarily blocks your local public IP address to protect your site.
Common Triggers for an Accidental Block:
- Repeated Failed Logins: Entering an incorrect password several times in Plesk, Webmail, FTP, or your WordPress admin page (
wp-login.php).
- Saved or Outdated Passwords: An email client (such as Outlook or Apple Mail) or an FTP client (such as FileZilla) silently attempting to connect in the background using an old or mistyped password.
- Rapid Administrative Actions: Uploading large batches of unsupported files or repeatedly triggering Web Application Firewall (WAF) security rules.
- Shared Office or Home Wi-Fi: Another person or device sharing your local network triggered a security rule, resulting in the firewall blocking the single public IP shared by everyone on that router.
(Note: Shared hosting environments do not support SSH access. Connection attempts over SSH or unsupported ports will also trigger an immediate firewall block).
Step 1: Confirm You Are Experiencing an IP Block
You can verify whether your IP is blocked in seconds:
- Disconnect from Wi-Fi on your mobile phone and switch strictly to cellular data (5G/LTE) (or connect through a VPN).
- Visit your website or Plesk URL: If the site loads immediately on cellular data but fails on your Wi-Fi, your home or office IP address has been blocked by the server firewall.
Step 2: What to Provide Support to Get Unblocked
To maintain strict security on shared hosting servers, our team does not simply disable security rules or whitelist unknown threats. Instead, our support team inspects the exact security event, ensures there is no active risk, and manually unblocks your IP address.
To get back into your account quickly, retrieve your connection details using Rebel’s dedicated IP lookup tool:
- Rebel.com users: Visit myip.rebel.com
- Rebel.ca users: Visit myip.rebel.ca
Copy the information displayed on that page (it will look similar to this):
Your IP Address: 198.51.100.42
Your OS/Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/120.0.0.0 Safari/537.36
Timestamp: 2026-10-27 12:00:00 UTC
Provide those details to our Support team along with:
- Your primary domain name or direct Plesk server address (e.g.,
canada22.rebel.com).
Step 3: Prevent Future Lockouts
Once our team clears the block:
- Update Saved Passwords: Check desktop email programs (Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail) and FTP tools to ensure they are using your current, active credentials.
- Use Password Resets Early: If a login fails once or twice, pause and reset your credentials rather than attempting multiple guesses in a row.
- Verify FTP Settings: Ensure any automated publishing tools or file transfer clients use standard FTP/FTPS on authorized ports.
